The Tampa Water Department has started a $42 million upgrade to chemical systems at the David L. Tippin Water Treatment Facility. The project will improve disinfection processes and strengthen long-term operational resilience.

The work includes construction of an on-site sodium hypochlorite generation facility, allowing the utility to produce liquid bleach at the plant. The project also adds a more reliable ammonia delivery system to support future demand and improve treatment performance.

The upgrades aim to optimize water treatment, reduce dependence on transported chemicals, lower operating costs, and increase storage safety. The utility expects improvements in water taste and odor as well.

Funding comes from Tampa’s PIPES program, a $2.9 billion initiative to modernize the city’s water and wastewater infrastructure.
