SEPTA has approved the purchase of 24 commuter rail coach cars to support Regional Rail operations during ongoing fleet repairs. The agency will acquire the vehicles from Exo under an $8.58 million agreement.
The project involves integrating second-hand Bombardier Comet coach cars into SEPTA’s Regional Rail system. The agency will modify the vehicles to meet operational requirements, including adjustments to doors and onboard systems. The coaches will operate with SEPTA’s ACS-64 electric locomotives.
The purchase is funded through a portion of $220 million in capital funding allocated by the State of Pennsylvania for safety upgrades and infrastructure improvements. The additional vehicles will help offset capacity constraints caused by repairs to the Silverliner IV fleet, which represents a majority of SEPTA’s rail cars.
