The San Mateo County Transit District (SamTrans) has approved a $36.3 million contract with Clark Construction Group to install charging facilities to support its growing electric bus fleet. The initial phase will provide charging for 37 electric buses, with a design that allows for future expansion to accommodate up to 110 additional zero-emission vehicles.

The investment is a major part of the agency’s larger capital plan to electrify its total fleet of approximately 315 buses. The project is funded through a combination of federal and state sources, including a competitive grant from the California Local Partner Programme and funding from the state’s Low Carbon Transit Operations Programme (LCTOP), which supports projects aimed at reducing greenhouse gas emissions. Construction on the charging facilities is scheduled to begin later in 2025. Once completed, the new infrastructure will enable SamTrans to expand its zero-emission service, contributing to improved air quality and sustainability in the region.
