The Bureau of Reclamation has awarded a $9.7 million contract to WCA Construction, LLC to upgrade a critical segment of the Reach 1 Pipeline under the Navajo-Gallup Water Supply Project (NGWSP) in northwest New Mexico. The contract supports improvements to a 42-inch ductile iron pipeline originally acquired from the San Juan Generating Station water system in 2023.
The Reach 1 segment conveys raw water from the San Juan River Intake Pumping Plant to the Frank Chee Willetto Reservoir. The upgrades will bring the 13-year-old pipeline up to project standards and ensure long-term operational reliability.
Additional solicitations are planned in the coming weeks for the construction of major components of the San Juan Lateral, including the river intake and pumping plant, and the water treatment facility. Once completed, this system will supply treated water to the eastern Navajo Nation, southwestern Jicarilla Apache Nation, and the city of Gallup.
The NGWSP is now over 70 percent complete. Authorized under the Omnibus Public Land Management Act of 2009 (Public Law 111-11), the project will ultimately comprise approximately 300 miles of pipeline, 19 pumping plants, two water treatment facilities, and multiple storage tanks.
Initial water deliveries are expected in late 2028, with full project completion by the end of 2029.
