The Metropolitan Washington Airports Authority (MWAA) is considering an $800 million modernization of Terminal 1 at Ronald Reagan Washington National Airport. The proposed redevelopment would replace aging facilities while retaining the terminal’s existing gate capacity.
Plans call for the demolition and replacement of gates A1 through A9. MWAA would construct nine new gates in a redesigned location and add a new passenger processing facility. The project would also renovate existing interior and exterior terminal areas.
Additional work would include apron reconstruction, roadway improvements, and upgrades to stormwater infrastructure. The redesigned gate area would provide greater flexibility for future aircraft and operational requirements. Terminal 1 currently serves Air Canada, Frontier Airlines, and Southwest Airlines.
MWAA is currently evaluating the proposal through an environmental study.
