International Transportation Service (ITS) has officially launched a $365 million terminal expansion at the Port of Long Beach’s Pier G, aimed at enhancing operational efficiency, expanding cargo capacity, and modernizing maritime infrastructure. A groundbreaking ceremony was held on July 11, attended by port officials, city leadership, and labor representatives.

The project involves filling an inactive 19-acre water slip located within the terminal, creating new operational space for stacking cargo containers and supporting on-dock activities. The expansion will include the construction of a single, uninterrupted 3,400-foot-long wharf, enabling the terminal to simultaneously berth two ultra-large container vessels—each capable of carrying up to 18,000 twenty-foot equivalent units (TEUs).

To complete the infill, approximately 2.5 million cubic yards of sediment will be reused, sourced from within the Harbor District and from dredging operations at Newport Harbor. The ITS terminal, located in the port’s outer harbor, is currently divided by the south slip. Filling this slip will consolidate terminal operations, improve yard layout, and streamline cargo movement. According to ITS, the expansion is expected to increase cargo-handling capacity by 50 percent.

Construction is scheduled to be completed by late 2028. The terminal operator has also committed to incorporating green design features and expanding its use of rail for cargo movement to support the port’s environmental initiatives.
