The Port of Indiana–Burns Harbor has commenced construction on a $10 million on-dock warehouse, marking the first new warehouse at the Lake Michigan port in 25 years. The 84,000-square-foot facility, situated on a four-acre site adjacent to Berth 2, will include a 1.65-acre laydown yard to support  cargo handling.

The project is scheduled for completion in early 2026. Funding includes a $4 million grant from the U.S. Department of Transportation’s Maritime Administration Port Infrastructure Development Program, with the remaining costs covered by the Ports of Indiana.

This warehouse is a component of a broader $77 million multimodal expansion at Burns Harbor, aimed at increasing capacity and enhancing supply chain flexibility. The port currently handles approximately 3 million tons of cargo annually and maintains 640,000 square feet of warehouse space across five buildings. Plans are also underway to introduce international container service in 2026.
