The Port Authority of New York and New Jersey approved $75 million in upgrades for Terminal B at Newark Liberty International Airport. The funding represents the first phase of a larger $200 million modernization effort planned over the next three years.

The agency will begin construction later this year as it advances long-term redevelopment plans for the airport. The interim work will keep Terminal B operational until a replacement facility opens in the mid-2030s.Terminal B opened in 1973 and now handles significantly higher passenger volumes than originally planned. The terminal served approximately 11.5 million passengers in 2025, compared to its original annual design capacity of 6.8 million passengers.

The improvement program targets aging infrastructure and heavily used passenger areas across the terminal and its satellite buildings. Planned upgrades include renovated gate areas, new seating and lighting, restroom improvements, upgraded escalators and elevators, and modernization of baggage handling equipment.

Crews will also improve passenger boarding bridges, HVAC systems, and ADA accessibility features throughout the facility. The initial phase will prioritize high-traffic circulation areas and equipment most critical to daily airport operations.

The broader Newark Liberty redevelopment program includes construction of a new Terminal B, improvements to Terminal C, taxiway reconfiguration, roadway upgrades, and replacement of the existing AirTrain Newark system. The Port Authority also plans to expand rail station access serving the airport.

The agency opened Newark Liberty’s new Terminal A in 2023 as part of the wider airport modernization program. Future redevelopment work aims to improve operational reliability, passenger flow, and long-term airport capacity.
