Pier 400 has signed a contract with Orange EV for 40 battery-electric yard tractors, increasing its electric fleet to 60 units. The investment supports APM Terminals’ transition away from diesel-powered equipment and advances emissions reduction efforts at one of the largest container terminals in the United States.
The expansion follows more than a year of operating experience with an initial fleet deployed in 2025. The vehicles logged more than 42,000 operating hours while maintaining a 98.8% uptime rate. The fleet also displaced over 40,700 gallons of diesel fuel and avoided an estimated 427 metric tons of carbon dioxide emissions.
The EPA is partially funding the project through its Clean Ports Program. The procurement forms part of an $80 million funding award that supports emissions-reduction initiatives at the terminal.
APM Terminals expects all 60 electric tractors to enter service by January 2027. Once deployed, battery-electric vehicles will account for approximately 60% of Pier 400’s terminal tractor fleet. The project will make Pier 400 the first container terminal at the Port of Los Angeles to fully electrify its on-dock rail drayage fleet.
The investment reflects a broader shift from pilot projects to large-scale deployment of zero-emission cargo-handling equipment at US ports. As operators gain confidence in vehicle performance and reliability, many are expanding electrification efforts with support from federal funding programs.
