The Pennsylvania Department of Transportation has awarded Fay, S&B USA Construction a $39 million contract to replace the Layton Bridge in Fayette County.
The project will replace the existing one-lane, 17-span steel Pratt truss bridge over the Youghiogheny River with a new two-lane, three-span composite steel I-girder bridge. The current structure, built in 1899, has reached the end of its service life due to age and corrosion.
Fay, S&B USA Construction will deliver the bridge replacement and complete related roadway, safety, and alignment improvements in Perry Township and Perryopolis Borough. The contractor will build the new bridge approximately 200 feet southeast of the existing structure using a temporary trestle to maintain traffic flow during most of construction.
The project includes realignment of Layton Road and closure of the Layton Tunnel after completion, as the tunnel will no longer align with the new roadway configuration.
PennDOT is funding the project through its state bridge replacement program. The agency did not disclose federal funding participation.
The replacement will improve traffic capacity, enhance safety, and provide a reliable crossing for residents, school transportation, emergency services, and pedestrians in Fayette County.
