New York & Atlantic Railway (NYA) has completed a $1.7 million capital improvement project to expand capacity and operational efficiency at its primary interchange location. The “5 Main to 1 Iron Connector” project added 1,000 feet of new track and five turnouts, creating a 9,000-foot-long interchange track capable of holding full-length trains without disrupting adjacent operations.

The expanded track enables more seamless interchange of freight traffic with CSX and the Providence & Worcester Railroad. Previously, shorter track length caused operational delays of up to two hours during train handoffs.

The project was funded through a combination of New York State grants and NYA capital investment.

In addition to the interchange upgrade, NYA is undertaking several other routine capital projects this year, including:

  • Lifting and tamping 800 feet of track and replacing 100 cross ties at Pine Aire Yard to improve drainage
  • Extending a stub-end track in West Yard from 600 to 1,400 feet and installing turnouts to support run-through operations.
