The Northern Virginia Transportation Authority (NVTA) has launched a Draft Action Plan for a regional Bus Rapid Transit (BRT) system. The Draft Action Plan identifies up to 28 potential BRT routes to expand all-day The identified routes are designed to complement and extend existing transit options, including Metro, Virginia Railway Express (VRE), and local commuter bus systems. This proposed system builds upon NVTA’s investments in five BRT segments, totaling over USD880 million.
While the primary focus of the routes is in Northern Virginia, several routes also extend into frequently visited areas in Maryland and Washington, D.C.
NVTA is soliciting public input to determine which BRT routes should be prioritized for future funding cycles. Feedback can be provided through an online form until May 18, 2025. The public will also have an opportunity to view the BRT system map and engage with NVTA staff in person at a series of pop-up events.
Following the incorporation of community feedback, NVTA staff will present recommendations to Authority board members, seeking the adoption of the Draft Action Plan in July 2025.
