New Jersey Transit (NJ Transit) has awarded the construction contract for the new Raritan River Bridge on the North Jersey Coast Line (NJCL) to Skanska Koch Inc. of Carteret, New Jersey. The bridge spans the Raritan River between Perth Amboy and South Amboy and will replace the existing century-old swing bridge. The contract is valued at $444.38 million, with an additional 5 per cent for contingencies.
The scope of work includes construction of the lift portion of the replacement bridge, which will have a centre span that lifts vertically to allow for marine traffic to pass underneath. The vertical lift bridge will provide a new two-track moveable span across the river.
The project is estimated to cost $595 million. Of this, $446 million is funded by the Federal Transit Administration (FTA). The project is expected to be completed in 2026.
