Tennessee has announced the Music City Loop, a $100% privately funded underground transit system to be developed by The Boring Company. The project will connect downtown Nashville and the Music City Center to Nashville International Airport (BNA) via a 10-mile tunnel with an estimated transit time of eight minutes.
The system will use zero-emission electric vehicles operating in underground tunnels beneath state-owned roadways. Construction is expected to begin following completion of permitting, with the first segment targeted to open by fall 2026.
The Music City Loop will be developed and operated by The Boring Company at no cost to taxpayers. The project is expected to reduce surface traffic congestion, lower road maintenance costs, and support high-volume passenger movement during peak travel times and major events. It marks the company’s second major transit project, following the operational Vegas Loop. Nashville was selected for the project due to its rapid growth and economic potential.
The system will meet or exceed National Fire Protection Association (NFPA-130) safety standards. Stakeholder engagement and route planning are underway, with federal coordination led by the U.S. Department of Transportation and the Transportation Security Administration.
