The Metropolitan Transportation Authority (MTA) has approved the purchase of 316 new M-9A commuter railcars, with 160 designated for the Long Island Rail Road (LIRR) and 156 for Metro-North Railroad. The first pilot units of the railcars will be delivered by Alstom Transportation in 2029 and will first enter LIRR passenger service in 2030. Full fleet deployment is projected to be completed by 2032. The M-9A cars are designed to enhance service reliability and significantly improve the passenger experience. They feature updated interiors, convenient USB charging ports, larger glass windows for improved visibility, and a range of accessibility enhancements, including automatic doors for bathrooms. This new fleet is set to replace the aging M-3 units currently in service on both the LIRR and Metro-North Railroad, many of which are past their intended service life.
