The Metropolitan Transportation Authority (MTA) has awarded a $51 million contract to design and replace three aging road bridges that cross the Long Island Rail Road’s Montauk Branch. The project includes the Sagg Road Bridge in Sagaponack, the Cranberry Hole Road Bridge in Amagansett, and the River Avenue Bridge in Eastport.
The bridges were built between 1895 and 1921 and have deteriorated after decades of service. The Cranberry Hole Road and River Avenue bridges have remained closed since 2023 and 2024 because of structural deficiencies. Contractors will demolish the existing bridges and construct new structures that meet current roadway and railroad clearance standards. The project also includes retaining walls, roadway reconstruction at bridge approaches, and drainage improvements.
The MTA expects to complete the design in January 2027. Demolition work will begin later this year, and the agency plans to complete construction by July 2028.
