The Massachusetts Bay Transportation Authority (MBTA) has announced the ongoing progression of critical infrastructure work across its subway system, building upon the successful completion of the Track Improvement Program in December 2024. Significant upgrades have also been undertaken at the Red Line’s Codman Yard facility, aimed at improving working conditions for crews and bolstering overall system reliability for riders.
Regarding other lines, approximately 38 feet of rail were replaced on the downtown portions of the Green Line, where tunnel inspections were also conducted. At the Lake Street Yard, located at the end of the B Branch, about 78 feet of rail were replaced. Fiber cable replacement was also carried out near Lechmere. On the Blue Line’s “Bowdoin loop track”, two critical power switches within the loop area, along with surrounding switch support infrastructure, rails, and track, were significantly worn out and have been upgraded. On the Orange Line, crews replaced 6,200 feet of rail, implemented station improvements designed to enhance the rider experience, performed power upgrades, and advanced signal modernization efforts.
