Construction has begun on the final 13-mile section of the Mountain Parkway Expansion, connecting Salyersville in Magoffin County to Prestonsburg in Floyd County. The project marks the last phase of a 45-mile, $1 billion initiative to complete a continuous four-lane corridor linking Eastern Kentucky to the rest of the state.

The Magoffin-Floyd segment will extend the parkway east from Salyersville, creating an entirely new roadway. Work includes multiple new bridge structures, a modern roundabout at the Prestonsburg terminus, and an estimated 30 million cubic yards of excavation. The design emphasizes improved safety, reduced congestion, and more efficient traffic flow.

The project advanced after securing a $116.3 million federal Multimodal Project Discretionary Grant in 2024, alongside a $150 million state funding commitment. Environmental approval for the cross-country alignment, selected to minimize impacts on homes and businesses, was granted by the Federal Highway Administration the same year.

When complete, the Mountain Parkway Expansion will widen 32 miles of existing roadway and add 13 miles of new highway. The initiative will close the only remaining gap in a 400-mile four-lane corridor across Kentucky, supporting commerce, mobility, and long-term regional development.
