The Georgia Department of Transportation has received authorization from the Federal Highway Administration to lead a multi-state research initiative focused on connected vehicle technology.
The initiative, known as the Vehicle to Everything Pooled Fund Study, launched on January 1, 2026. It brings together 20 US state transportation agencies and Transport Canada to study real-world applications of vehicle-to-everything communication systems. Participating agencies have committed a combined $3.125 million to support the research, with additional states expected to join.
The study examines how vehicles communicate wirelessly with other vehicles, roadway infrastructure, and digital networks. The research focuses on improving traffic safety, traffic flow, and support for automated driving technologies through real-time data exchange. Georgia DOT’s Division of Permits and Operations is administering the program. The department is partnering with Georgia Southern University to support program management and research coordination.
The study group will hold monthly virtual meetings and two in-person meetings each year. The first in-person meeting is scheduled for May 2026 in Salt Lake City and will be hosted by the Utah Department of Transportation.
