The Gary/Chicago International Airport (GCIA) awarded a $15 million contract to Superior Construction Co. to build a new cargo and general aviation ramp. The project will construct 8.5 acres of concrete ramp on a 50-acre site and is scheduled for completion within five months.
Airport officials said the contract is the largest awarded since the 2015 main runway expansion and is expected to create 85 construction jobs. The ramp forms part of GCIA’s ongoing 2025 cargo service expansion, which included the $925,000 acquisition of 4.7 acres in April.
GCIA’s cargo sector has grown rapidly since launching less than five years ago, following earlier infrastructure investments including a runway extension, a U.S. Customs and Border Protection facility, and a long-term lease with UPS for cargo operations. The airport currently ranks third in Indiana for freight volume.
