The U.S. Department of Transportation’s Federal Highway Administration (FHWA) awarded $44.5 million in grants to communities in 13 states and Puerto Rico through its Active Transportation Infrastructure Investment Program (ATIIP). The grant will help plan, design, and build projects that create connected networks, improve safety for bikers and pedestrians, and enhance access to public transit. These include sidewalks, bikeways, and trails linking schools, workplaces, transit, and other key locations. Grants also support the planning and construction of “transportation spines” that connect multiple communities or regions.

Projects receiving funding include:

  • California: $1.4 million for the Santa Ynez Valley Active Transportation Regional Connector.
  • Massachusetts: $1.2 million for the “Reimagining the 110” project in the Merrimack Valley.
  • Michigan: $10.5 million for Detroit’s Joe Louis Greenway.
  • Pennsylvania: $13.7 million for Philadelphia’s Wissahickon Gateway Trail.
  • Puerto Rico: $2 million for an active transportation network in San Juan.
  • Tennessee: $9.4 million for Nashville’s “East Nashville Spokes” project.
