The Federal Highway Administration (FHWA) has announced the availability of $5.4 billion in funding for bridge repair and replacement through two national grant programs: $4.9 billion through the Bridge Investment Program and up to $500 million through the Competitive Highway Bridge Program for rural areas.

The funding aims to address structural deficiencies across the U.S. bridge network, including roughly 42,000 bridges classified in poor condition. Grants will support major bridge projects that improve freight movement, enhance community connectivity, and ensure the safe movement of people and goods.

The updated grant notices remove several requirements related to climate resilience, environmental justice, workforce equity, and diversity that were included in previous versions of the program. Applicants are now no longer required to address greenhouse gas emissions, climate adaptation strategies, or disproportionate environmental impacts on disadvantaged communities in their proposals. Requirements related to workforce development and inclusive hiring practices have also been eliminated.
