The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers (USACE) has awarded Ferrovial a $1.08 billion contract to expand and improve a section of the Río Piedras channel in San Juan, Puerto Rico. The project forms part of the broader Puerto Nuevo flood control program, which aims to reduce flood risks in the Puerto Rican capital.

The project will widen the channel from 80 feet to more than 160 feet. Ferrovial will also reinforce canal walls using deep concrete pile structures anchored more than 100 feet below ground. The piles will connect through reinforced concrete beams, while selected sections will incorporate a double-wall system to improve structural stability.

Additional work will focus on improving water flow, reducing sediment buildup, and increasing resilience to heavy rainfall events. The upgrades are designed to strengthen riverbanks, limit erosion, and reduce landslide risks in densely developed areas near the channel.

This is Ferrovial’s second contract under the Puerto Nuevo flood control program. The broader initiative is expected to span approximately six years and generate more than 10,000 direct and indirect jobs. Once completed, the improvements will help protect nearby neighborhoods, businesses, and critical infrastructure from future flooding.
