The Florida Department of Transportation (FDOT) will invest $500 million to construct 17 miles of new express lanes on Interstate 4 in Hillsborough County and build a 100-space truck parking facility in Polk County. The projects aim to relieve congestion and address parking shortages along one of Florida’s busiest freight and commuter corridors.

FDOT will build single express lanes in each direction between Interstate 75 and County Line Road within the existing right-of-way. The new lanes will separate long-distance and local traffic to improve travel reliability across the Tampa–St. Petersburg region.

Construction is scheduled to begin in 2028 under the state’s Moving Florida Forward infrastructure program, which accelerates major projects by up to 15 years.

The $500 million project cost will be funded through state transportation revenues. FDOT previously completed an interchange upgrade at Daryl Carter Parkway near Orlando in 2025, part of the same corridor improvement effort.

In addition to the express lanes, FDOT will develop a 100-space truck parking lot at the Polk Parkway and I-4 interchange east of Tampa. The facility will help reduce illegal roadside parking and support freight safety. The project complements federally funded efforts to add 917 truck parking spaces in Osceola, Seminole, and Volusia counties, valued between $29.5 million and $74 million.

Both initiatives form part of Florida’s long-term plan to expand roadway capacity and improve freight efficiency statewide.
