The Chicago Transit Authority (CTA) has commenced essential preparatory work for the transformative Red Line Extension (RLE) project on the Far South Side, with major groundbreaking scheduled for early 2026. Current construction activities include property demolition along the future Red Line track alignment and the relocation of utility poles and equipment in the area. Additionally, Walsh-VINCI Transit Community Partners (Walsh VINCI), the contractor for the project, is conducting soil boring work to analyze the soil composition, which is crucial for developing the designs for the foundations and related structures of the new track.
Major construction on the $5.7 billion Red Line Extension project is scheduled to commence in 2026 and continue through 2030. Walsh VINCI is currently in the design phase and is developing the construction schedule, with significant groundbreaking expected in early 2026. The construction work will be divided into six geographic areas, allowing crews to work simultaneously on new track structures, stations, and track systems, including signals and other operational equipment. The construction of the elevated track structure from the 95th/Dan Ryan Red Line station to the 119th Street station will utilize individual concrete bridge segments, which have been manufactured off-site and which will then be transported to the construction site and assembled using a large construction gantry system, minimizing community impact.
