Carteret has awarded a $47 million construction contract to Brockwell & Carrington Contractors for the Carteret Multimodal Ferry Terminal. Construction is scheduled to begin in December 2025 and take 18 to 24 months.
The project includes a multi-level terminal building with space for ticketing, restrooms, retail, offices, and public use. Each floor will be about 13,000 square feet. The project follows federal and state approvals and a competitive bid process.
Work already completed includes installation of 130 feet of steel sheet pile bulkhead and dredging to support ferry slips and docking areas. The borough will also begin construction of a 700-space parking lot.
The terminal will support initial ferry service offering several daily trips between Carteret and Manhattan, with service adjustments based on demand. The facility will accommodate NJ Transit buses, jitneys, and rideshare drop-offs.
Carteret has secured more than $90 million in federal and state grants for the broader ferry project, including $1.9 million from the New Jersey Urban Enterprise Zone Authority for retail space.
The terminal is expected to open by early 2028.
