The Biden–Harris Administration has announced a $149.9 million grant to the Indianapolis Public Transportation Corporation (IndyGo) to construct the Blue Line bus rapid transit (BRT) project, following a previous $22 million Rebuilding American Infrastructure with Sustainability and Equity (RAISE) discretionary grant program.
The project will reduce travel times by up to 35 per cent. It includes new sidewalks, traffic signals, storm drainage upgrades, and ADA improvements. The line will serve over 45,000 residents within walking distance of stations.
The final design was completed in September 2024. Construction works are expected to commence soon. The BRT route will span 14.9 miles and will connect downtown Indianapolis, the airport, and the State Capitol. The Blue Line will stop at three high schools and at several planned redevelopment areas.
The funding will help improve public transportation, connecting key areas such as downtown Indianapolis and the airport. The Blue Line project will reduce travel time, enhance accessibility, and expand service to thousands of riders. This investment aims to modernize Indianapolis’s public transit network and boost economic development in the region.
