Atlanta Beltline Inc. has released a $3.5 billion plan for a light-rail system along the 22-mile Beltline loop, identifying routes, station locations, and cost estimates after a two-year study.

The proposal includes three service loops: a full Beltline loop and separate northern and southern loops. In total, the system would provide 24.2 miles of light-rail with trains arriving about every 10 minutes. The plan calls for the purchase of 42 light-rail vehicles and development of support facilities, estimated at $270 million and $210 million respectively.

The northwest segment, the most complex section, would span 5.5 miles from Grove Park to Armour Yards. It is projected to cost about $800 million, the highest of the studied corridors, due to right-of-way needs along active CSX rail lines. The route was chosen for its lower cost compared with alternatives and for faster travel times. Proposed stops include Piedmont Hospital and Armour Yards.

The southwest and southeast sections would use existing abandoned rail corridors owned by the Beltline. Thirteen stations are proposed in the southern area, with stops at Murphy Crossing, West End, and Boulevard, and connections to MARTA’s Summerhill bus rapid transit line and proposed heavy rail infill stations at Murphy Avenue, Joseph E. Boone, Krog Street, and Armour Yards.

Funding sources have not been finalized. Beltline officials are preparing an implementation and financing plan by the end of 2025.
