The Alabama Port Authority awarded a contract to Konecranes for two rubber-tired gantry (RTG) cranes to support the Montgomery Intermodal Container Transfer Facility (ICTF).

The nearly $100 million project is primarily funded through federal appropriations and developed in partnership with CSX. Construction began in February 2025.

The cranes will form the backbone of container handling operations at the new terminal. Delivery is scheduled for late 2026, keeping the project on track for operations in early 2027.

The equipment includes smart technologies that improve safety, accuracy, and yard efficiency. They will streamline transfers between rail and truck and enhance overall productivity.

The ICTF will extend the Port of Mobile’s reach into central Alabama, adding new rail and truck connections to global markets. The project is expected to accelerate freight movement, support job creation, and strengthen regional supply chains. Since its 2022 announcement, more than $8 billion in private investment has been committed in the area.
