The Arizona Department of Transportation (ADOT) has installed a $5 million-wrong-way driver detection and warning system on Interstate 19. These upgrades will span multiple locations between Tucson and Nogales.
ADOT’s system will use thermal cameras to detect vehicles traveling in the wrong direction and instantly alert law enforcement and motorists via overhead message boards. This technology, already deployed in the Phoenix area, aims to reduce response times and improve driver awareness. ADOT will install wrong-way detection at key interchanges, including San Xavier Road and Pima Mine Road, and on message boards near Green Valley and Nogales.
These upgrades are part of a broader $6.2 million intelligent transportation systems project along I-19, which includes linking traffic signals to fiber-optic cable. This connectivity allows for remote signal monitoring and real-time adjustments to improve traffic flow.
With support from federal funding, ADOT continues expanding fiber-optic conduit statewide, including along I-17 and I-40, to support both transportation and rural broadband development. On I-19, this conduit enables the deployment of smart technologies to increase road safety and efficiency. ADOT expects to complete the I-19 safety upgrades in winter 2025–2026.
