South Florida Regional Transportation Authority has ordered seven Siemens Charger diesel-electric locomotives to replace aging units in the Tri-Rail commuter fleet.
The procurement will add seven new locomotives designed for commuter rail service across Miami-Dade, Broward, and Palm Beach counties. The units will replace six EMD GP49 locomotives built in 1980. The new locomotives will also meet operational requirements for service into MiamiCentral Station.
Siemens Mobility will manufacture the locomotives, which are scheduled for delivery and entry into service in 2029. The Chargers are Buy America compliant and will be built in Sacramento, California.
The new locomotives will operate along Tri-Rail’s 73.5-mile corridor between Miami and West Palm Beach, with an additional 8-mile segment on the Florida East Coast Corridor to access MiamiCentral.
