AltonWorks has launched a $25 million project to build a citywide fiber network. The project, called FiberNet, aims to reach 94% of households with high-speed internet service.
The Illinois Department of Commerce and Economic Opportunity provided $20 million for the project through a state grant. i3 Broadband is delivering the network and began construction in March. The company plans to complete the buildout by 2027.
FiberNet will offer internet service with speeds up to 10 gigabits per second. i3 Broadband states that service plans will start at $30 per month for 300 megabits per second. The project intends to expand service availability for households without previous access and support local businesses and remote workers.
